Introduction

In the late 19th century and early 20th century a flood of European and Asian immigrants came to the United States. They would become the labor base for the Industrial Revolution. Through their struggles and trials they formed unions and defined workers rights. The immigrants worked in factories and labored in the coal mines that fueled industry. The living condintions in urban areas resembled many third world countries today and the company coal mining towns were model examples of exploitation and control of a captive population.

Your duo will create a Muckraker Article. As a pair you will share the tasks of being investigative reporters, photographers, and political cartoonists. You will need to bring an issue of the Industrial Revolution Era to the public eye. The goal of your article is to capture the spirit of the era (1890-1920) with accuracy and expose the problems and accomplishments of the times. Be sure to cite the sources of both your quotes and any photographs you use for your article. Once the articles are written they will be shared with the class by the author. The Issues

Step 1

Research your issue by using the links provided under resources. You may also use Google. IF you use Google make sure the sites you visit ar valid. One way to do this is to add site:.edu after your search criteria. Pick an topic from the issues list or come up with one on your own (check with your teacher to make sure your issue will fit the task)

Step 2

Once you have decided on an issue, each person will write an article, draw or find a political cartoon online, and find an appropraite photograph to accompany their article. Again be sure to cite the sources that you use for both the article and the photograph.

Step 3

Writing the article. It should be informative and accurate. make sure you cover the who, what, why, where, and when of journalism.

Step 4

Analyzing the cartoons and photographs. For the cartoons: determine what the issue is, what are the symbols used, and what is the opinion of the author. Write out the answers to these questions on a piece of paper to be handed in with the cartoon. If you are creating your own cartoon these questions should be answered and noted on the cartoon. For analyzing photographs: who is the subject?, what was the photographer trying to convey? and why?. Answer these questions as with the cartoon and turn them in with the photograph.

Step 5

Criteria for the article: Ask yourself these questions and determine if your article answers them.
Does it inform the reader of an issue, topic, or event?
Is the article unbiased?
Does it present both sides of the issue?
Does it have a catchey headline?
Is the Author's name and the date included?
Does it answer the who, what, why, where, and when?

Step 6

Deliver the news to your fellow classmates. You will share your article, cartoon, and photograph with the class.
