Turnpikes and Roads in the Town of Caroline

The Catskill Turnpike was extended into the Town of Caroline in 1804. This road brought pioneers to our area. It was given its first hard surface about 1905, and is now New York State Route 79.

Long ago, many road names honored people, families, places or things. Over time, many of them were changed to more modern names. Speed Road, Goodrich Road, and Lounsbury Road are examples.

These historical markers may be found on Route 79 a short distance from our school.
