Railroad Trestles in the Town of Caroline

On October 1875 the wooden trestle at Brooktondale was started, and completed in December 1875. It was 1600 long and 90 feet tall. The old trestle began to weaken, and it seemed so scarey that the passengers would walk if they wanted to. In 1894 the wooden tracks were replaced with steel ones. Over the valley the steel trestle was about 800 ft. long and 85 ft. high at its tallest point. The trestle was used by movie companies in Ithaca during the time that silent movies were produced there.

The Lehigh Vally service was ended on July 1, 1935, on the old branch line over the stretch from VanEtten to East Ithaca. The Brooktondale trestle was taken down shortly after the last train.
