Written by Paula Long

The Central Leatherstocking Region runs along the Mohawk River Valley, west of Albany.  It gets its name from its central location in the state and from the “leather leggings that English settlers in the Mohawk River Valley wore in the 1700's.” (All Around New York, Mark Stewart, Heinemann.

Four major rivers run through the Central Leatherstocking Region: the Mohawk, Delaware, Susquehanna, and Chenango.

Cities in the Central Leatherstocking Region include Cooperstown, location of the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Oneonta, home of the National Soccer Hall of Fame, and Binghamton.
