Ithaca is in the Finger Lakes Region. The Finger Lakes encompasses a chain of eleven lakes that were formed by the advance and retreat of glaciers more than 15,000 years ago.
Seven of these lakes together look like the fingers on a hand. From east to west these seven lakes are: Otisco, Skaneateles, Owasco, Cayuga, Seneca, Keuka, and Canandaigua.
Other cities and towns in the Finger Lakes Region include Watkins Glen and Geneva, on opposite ends of Seneca Lake, Trumansburg, near Cayuga Lake, Skaneateles on Skaneateles Lake, Auburn and Moravia on Owasco Lake, and Hammondsport, on Keuka Lake.
