The Hudson Valley Region runs along the Hudson River Valley from just south of Albany to New York City. The area is known for the beauty of the river and views of the Catskill Mountains.
Long before New York became a state in 1788, the Hudson River played an important role in transportation and brought settlers to the region. The river was first used by Native Americans travelers. After Henry Hudson sailed the Hudson River in 1609 Dutch ships began to carry goods from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes and into Canada. After the Erie Canal was completed in 1825 the Hudson River became a part of the most important transportation system in the world.
Throughout the Hudson River Valley Region you can still see the mansions and farms built by early settlers to this area.
Harriman and Bear Mountain State Parks are located in the Hudson Valley region.
Cities in this region include: Catskill, Hudson, Kingston, Poughkeepsie, Beacon, Newburgh, Ossining, and Peekskill.
