Syracuse is the fifth largest city in New York state.

Syracuse is on the south shore of Lake Onondaga in the Central New York region.  The city is 57 miles north of Ithaca.

The city was first called Salt Point in 1780 due to the salt deposits found in Syracuse's marshes.
