Atlantic Ocean Written by Paula Long    Atlantic Ocean The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest ocean on the earth.  It has an area of 31,830,000 sqare miles (82,440,000 sqare kilometers). The east coast of the United States is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. The ancient Greeks named the Atlantic Ocean for the mythological character, Atlas,  "who stood on pillars in the ocean to hold up the heavens."
