The St. Lawrence River flows between Lake Ontario and the Atlantic Ocean.  It is about 800 miles long.

It runs along the northern  border of New York state and the southern border of the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario.

From Lake Ontario to the Canadian city of Quebec the St. Lawrence River is freshwater.  At Quebec it becomes an estuary which means that the fresh water of the river begins to mix with salt water as it meets with the Atlantic Ocean.

The St. Lawrence River is an important waterway for ships traveling from the Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes.
